The Destruction Project
A downloadable Sandbox for Windows
UPDATE 1/27/2022:
"Hey everyone,
As much as I hate to admit it, I am getting nowhere fast with this project. Over the last year I have experienced a lot of change in my personal life but also many technical struggles with the development process, the largest of which being the loss of my primary dev files. I was already in the process of rewriting this project from the ground up so I consider it a major setback. It has been nearly a year since I was last able to push an update and I feel the least I could do is acknowledge the state of the project. For the past year I have only been able to spend a couple hours a week on TDP, and admittedly I haven't touched it in the most recent months since the loss of my files. I am not sure if I will continue development or not at this point, but I will leave the door open for the time being.
Thank you all for your support over the last year, I dearly hope I can come back to this, but for the time being I will have to set my keyboard down. I will be sure to update this page should progress resume."
Currently the sandbox features:
- Over 120 unique destroyable buildings!
- Over 35 drivable cars.
- 9 Special Vehicles.
- 3 Hand tools.
- 1 Large open world map.
Currently you can not:
- Airport building can not be destroyed yet.
- Starting hanger can not be destroyed yet.
- Elevated city road can not be destroyed yet.
- Airplanes can not be flown, but the helicopter flies quite nice!
I will try to post an update with bugfixes and features once per week going forward. Please leave feedback and suggestions to help me guide this project forward.
The development of this project is done completely solo and with $0 budget. While I intend to keep this project free until total completion, your donations go a long way to helping me further this! It's not expected at all, but if you would like to support the game here's my commitment:
- I will commit to put 70% of any donation directly back into this project in the form of new assets, new features, and overall improved content.
- 20% will go directly to a pot designated for publishing and advertising.
- Finally 10% will be put away to allow me to book days off to work on the project.
The Destruction Project
I have been working on and off on this concept for several years now. I was originally inspired by a now long lost, and possibly taboo indie Game Maker game circa 2007. In the game, you flew around a crude 3d city and dropped bombs. The buildings would blow up and fall, overall a simple but satisfying experience. I love general destruction in video games.
I don't yet know what exactly the game will be about, however it is the technical environment that matters to me for the time being. It has not been easy to implement large scale destruction in Unity and I am still running into bugs and issues constantly. Ultimately I want this to be 100% procedural and 100% Destructible. I'm on my third complete rewrite now and things are going much better this time. I've had to sacrifice a few things such as modular buildings, however I think it will be worth it for the performance gains.
As the sandbox currently stands, I have moved over to a very low poly toon style and focused on construction equipment as the tools for destruction. Currently I am in the process of rewriting the procedural generator to allow for much more flexibility. You will see a lot of change in the videos as I search for the best way to do this.
Follow this project to stay up to date! I will be hopefully releasing something for you guys to play with soon. Feedback and suggestions are the life blood of the indie dev, I appreciate all comments.
